Microsoft Office 2007 - Students Get A Better Deal?

OfficeHomeandStudent2007_webWe all know that students generally get “extra special discount offers” in order to push a little incentive to cash strapped teens. Microsoft is no exception to this rule, offering “Student Editions” for a lot of their software in an attempt to standardise what these young people are going to use for the next few years ahead. As a huge majority of schools, colleges & universities use Microsoft Office, and it is often the case students do look at the Microsoft offering as a serious consideration for the sake of compatibility. Yes, there are some extremely good alternatives most of which are free, but when you just need the real thing, what are the options? I’ve recently been looking at how students can purchase Office 2007 for use on their own PC’s and what deals are available to them. Lets take a look at the options I’ve found…

Windows LiveDrive

There are a huge number of online file storage services, but one important offering just released on 21st January is Microsoft’s Windows SkyDrive. Offering 5GB of free online storage space, this surpasses other offerings such as box.net but also boasts a maximum file size of 50MB.

An interesting idea is the sharing capabilities of this service. You can create folders to share with certain people, or share to the world. If you look down the right hand side of my blog (sorry for the people reading this by RSS), you will see I’ve added an icon for my Public shared items. You can also embed code in to your website or blog for individual files, however these are not direct links, and an initial holding screen will be shown before downloading the files.

Could this also mean an end to data loss on students USB memory sticks? Are schools going to block this? Post your thoughts in the comments.
